Image from Farm Africa Engaging youth in agriculture has been a prominent topic recently and has risen up the development agenda, as there is growing concern worldwide that young people have become disenchanted with agriculture. With this predicted concentration of the global population in urban areas it is easier to understand why the number of young farmers is in decline. So how do we reignite the love for farming when the trend is to live in cities and towns?
The concept or the construct of youth in society is very new and has emerged in the post- industrial period.
From a sociological point of view, we can look at youth from several perspectives as we try to define the meaning of the youth, as it occurs in society today. Youth can be viewed from a conflict perspective as the interface of youth and society can lead to tensions and conflicts.
Tensions also exist within the category of youth. Class, gender, race; ethnicity and opportunity may not be experienced by all youth in a similar fashion.
Youth is also likely to express itself as different, by subscribing to and inventing new distinct and different cultural practices. These sub-cultures or new youth-cultures are often very fluid and constantly developing and may be interfaces of tension and conflict between society and youth.
